Solva Sailor wins European Championship

Micky Beckett achieved one of his objectives in Varna, Bulgaria, by becoming European Champion in the ILCA 7 (Laser) class boat. Micky, who attended Solva CP and Ysgol Dewi Sant and learnt to sail in Solva Harbour, had twice come home with the silver medal and this time was determined to go one better. Racing against a fleet of top international sailors throughout a windy week on the Black Sea he led the event from the first race to the last, ending 16 points ahead of Croatia’s Filip Jurisic in second place. “I couldn’t be happier with how this event has gone,” said Micky, who earlier this year very narrowly missed out on the British place in the ILCA 7 at the Tokyo Olympics, “It was a tough week, but it all came good in the end”. His next event is the World Championship in Barcelona in early November.
